As you might have guessed from our love of Brooks Saddles, we have a soft spot for quality, handmade products with a history. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that such products are often superior to their modern counterparts, simply because their makers haven’t succumbed to the cost-cutting pressures of an increasingly global society.

That’s why we were really excited to be visited by a representative of the Peterboro Basket Company this week. This wasn’t just any company representative, though… she was a member of the family who has been making these fine baskets by hand since 1854.

The baskets are made in Peterboro, New Hampshire of 100% American-sourced materials, including the show-stopping American ash and oak woods, leather straps, and fine finishing nails. The quality is apparent… this is not your typical imported cheap wicker bike basket. This thing is built to last!

The original basket comes in regular, large, and x-large versions in natural, honey, and cherry finishes (the large Original basket is pictured here in honey). They also come in quick release versions, as well as picnic baskets, pet carriers, and other special-purpose models. Prices for the Original baskets range from $35-$50, which is really quite a bargain for a handmade product like this.

Here are some photos of our sample basket installed on the Kona Humu (come by and see it in person to truly appreciate its beauty!):
