Custom Wheelbuilding

Custom wheelbuilding is one of our specialties. Handbuilt wheels aren’t fashionable these days, as many new bikes come with fancy-looking, racing-inspired wheels. But very few people actually race their bikes. And those that do are more concerned with light “fast” wheels than with long-term durability, so these wheels tend not to hold up under hard use.

Over the years we’ve built countless wheelsets for all kinds of extreme uses: loaded touring, heavy riders, extreme off-road use, tandems. We have yet to have a single one come back with a broken spoke from fatigue. That is because we understand how to choose wheel components and assemble them properly so that they withstand years of heavy use.

Our Handbuilt Wheel Guarantee

Tell us what you plan to do with your wheels, your riding style, your weight and the weight of any load you will regularly be carrying. Choose a hub and a rim, and if we agree that those components will hold up for the proposed use, we will build you a wheelset guaranteed never to break a spoke under normal riding conditions. If you purchase all of the wheel components from us, we’ll give you a 50% discount on your build labor.

The key to a durable wheel a combination of quality components and proper and even spoke lacing and tension. Machine built wheels and even most shop-built wheels are built far too quickly to ensure that these variables come together to make the most durable wheel possible.

At Trinity, our wheels are never rushed. They’re built right, trued, stress-relieved, and then trued again. The majority of the wheels we build leave our shop and never need to be trued again. Those that do need truing generally only need it once, after a short initial “breaking in” period.

If your spokes don’t outlast your hubs and/or rims, we’ll replace the broken spoke and repair the wheel free of charge.
